Reading corner
For the Sake of Strangers
by Dorianne Laux
No matter what the grief, its weight,
we are obliged to carry it.
We rise and gather momentum, the dull strength
that pushes us through crowds.
And then the young boy gives me directions
so avidly. A woman holds the glass door open,
waiting patiently for my empty body to pass through.
All day it continues, each kindness
reaching toward another—a stranger
singing to no one as I pass on the path, trees
offering their blossoms, a retarded child
who lifts his almond eyes and smiles.
Somehow they always find me, seem even
to be waiting, determined to keep me
from myself, from the thing that calls to me
as it must have once called to them—
this temptation to step off the edge
and fall weightless, away from the world.

Healing notes
Kindness is such an important part of healing. Not just kindness to self but to others. Consistently being kind. Consistently focussing on warmth and kindness. I am trying so hard to be kind, kinder, kindest to others, to self and leave my judgmental side behind.
It is hard. I don't want to be angry with some people who've hurt me. I want to see their side. It is not an easy adventure or endeavour. I struggle and slip into the normaisedl practises. But off late I have been feeling like kindness comes easy in moments where other kindness is present. Where we are aware of people reaching out to their kinder selves and showing up.
Maybe what I need is to imagine a world where 'Each kindness is reaching towards another'.
What does your imagined kind world look like? How do you go about making it real?
